Our next trip is a backpacking campout in Music Pass just south of Westcliffe, CO and the Crestone Mountains. We will meet at the barn Friday at 5pm and drive to Music Pass. We need 4×4 vehicles to access the parking lot so we will probably need to carpool. We will plan to car camp at the parking lot which is really pretty and has plenty of nice camping options for Friday night. On Saturday, we can pack up and hike up and over Music Pass into the valley. The hike is about 2.2 miles depending on where we decide to camp. There are short day hike options to lakes or shorter peaks in the area.

We plan to return to the barn by noon on Sunday. We’re also looking for more adult supervision.

We will also be doing trip prep and meal planning for the Music Pass campout.

Hi, this is John.  I am building 3 information kiosk for 3 lakes on USAFA and working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The kiosk will be assembled before and transported to Ice Lake on USAFA the morning of September 8th. We will meet at Ice Lake at 9am for a safety briefing and install the first kiosk.  Your driver only needs a drivers license to get on base. The second will be at Deadman’s Lake and the third at Kettle Lake #1. We should be done by 1pm. We can help with transportation if needed. Please bring gloves. We plan to meet in the church at the beginning of the meeting for fellowship and a slide show about Music Pass. Afterward, we can head outside to the barn and Jefferson will lead the troop in a lesson and game for his Communications Merit Badge.

Please return any borrowed items from the Wyoming trip. Things like harnesses, ice axes, helmets, belay devices, binoculars, poles, crampons, trax, or anything else.

Don’t forget to prepare for Troop Elections at our meeting on 8/13. Come prepared wearing your uniform and have a speech ready to go. Please let Mr. Petree know what position you are running for at this week’s meeting.

Good afternoon scouts,

As you may know, I am working on my Eagle Project, which requires volunteers. My project will be at Westside Cares in Old Colorado City, which recently had a water leak in the basement, so some drywall under the stairs was damaged. We will cut out the damaged drywall, install new drywall there and on an additional wall, and build shelves where there were none before.

I need four scout volunteers to help me out. It will be great community service hours, which you will need for ranking up, and it will be a great experience to see what an Eagle Project looks like in action. If you are going, please bring work gloves, close-toed shoes, a water bottle, and safety glasses. I will provide masks, pizza for lunch, snacks, and some Gatorade. We will be starting a debrief at 8 am at Westside Cares, and finishing around 4 pm. If you can only show up for a half day, that is fine, just let me know at mileskunkle2@gmail.com.

This is Axel and I’m still in Wyoming but I wanted to invite you to help me with my Eagle Project. A shout-out to the Longs Peak crew! It was an awesome day in the mountains and pretty cool to summit a big mountain together.

This week we will meet at the barn on Tuesday and help prepare for Wyoming. We have bags and gear to pack and food to sort.  We could use your help even if you are not going on the trip because we have scouts who are out of town and unable to attend.

Long’s Peak climbers,

This trip is a BYOFSaOT (Bring Your Own Food, Snacks, and Other Things) day outing. We will be leaving later Friday night just to head up and take a little nap before starting a 3am trek.

We will be meeting at the church/barn and plan to depart Friday evening at 6pm

Mr. Anderson did a reconnaissance in Rocky Mountain National Park last weekend. There is still a lot of snow in that area, but according to recent reports, it is still possible to climb Long’s Peak. We will need to be prepared, which means having the right gear, and the right mindset. 

First, mindset – we will attempt Long’s, but we need to be ready to change our plan if the conditions are unsuitable. We will be trying the Loft Route, and if we reach the technical climbing and the snow/ice look unreasonable, our plan B option will be to attempt Mt Meeker instead. It is a 13er that connects to Long’s, and is an easy, non-technical hike from the Loft (the saddle between Long’s and Meeker). https://www.14ers.com/peaks/10136/13er-mount-meeker?t=routes

Second, Gear – with current conditions, traction devices are mandatory, so that means yak trax, micro spikes, etc., and a hiking pole at a minimum. Crampons and ice axe and would be better, but are not mandatory for everyone. I will be bringing micro spikes and my lightweight crampons and ice axe. Everyone will be on belay in any situation that a person could slip and fall. If there are long stretches of hard ice climbing, we will turn around.  To summarize, please bring:

Helmet
Harness
Gaiters
Micro Spikes and/or crampons
Hiking pole and/or ice axe
Everything else you would bring to climb a 14er in the summer (sunglasses, sunscreen, rain gear, food, water, etc.)

If you need to borrow a piece of equipment please let me know.

Following the fire ban at summer camp we figured its time for a good ‘ol campfire and game night. We will have stuff for S’mores as well as Cornhole, Spike Ball, and other fun games.

We have an opportunity this Friday to get your annual swim test taken care of. The test will be needed for both scout camp and the Wyoming High Adventure trip. Time: 1-2pm

Where: Downtown YMCA located at 207 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903

Parking: Please use the parking garage next door (just East of the entrance to the YMCA)

Cost: $3.50 for non-members

Bring: Come dressed in your swim gear with a change of clothes, water bottle, goggles and towel.

BSA Swim Test Requirements:

• Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming.
• Swim 75 yards (3 lengths of the pool) in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl (no dog-paddle).
• Swim 25 yards (1 length of the pool) using an easy, resting backstroke.
• The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
• After completing the swim, rest by floating (Typically, for up to one minute).
