Hi all, our policy is if there’s no D11 school, then there’s no scout meeting. We’ll see you Tuesday, Jan 14.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Cub Scout Pack 6 has invited Troop 287 to join them on their sledding trip to John Wesley Ranch on Sunday, Jan 5. This is a day trip and scouts need to arrange for their own transportation to and from. For more information about the event, visit the Pack 6 website:

  • The attraction is recommended for souls 13 and older. Younger scouts should be accompanied by a parent.
  • Cameras are not allowed.

Environmental Science MBThe boys of Troop 287 will be doing the Environmental Science merit badge at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on Saturday, Nov 2. This is one of the Eagle required merit badges and one we DON’T do during troop meetings (because of all the materials needed to do the merit badge). Probably the next best opportunity to earn this merit badge will be at summer camp.

Location: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Cost: $26.25 per scout (CLICK HERE to register and pay online now)
Uniform: Class A

We’ll also need to adults to attend as well. Not certain if there’s a cost for an adult to attend or not yet.

Due to certain time constraints, some sections of this merit badge may not be completed at the Zoo: Pollution Prevention (3F1 or 3F2) List 10 ways to prevent pollution and practice two of these at home for 7 days. This Homework will need to be completed ahead of time.

The boys of Troop 287 did a fantastic job on the 15- mile backpacking trip. This turned out to be quite a bit tougher and longer than we expected. Nonetheless, the boys persevered with tremendous spirits and attitudes. No doubt, this will be a trip they will remember and talk about for years to come.

Additionally, Christian successfully completed his scoutmaster conference for First Class rank and Michel completed his for the rank of Eagle while on the trip. Congrats to both scouts!

The boys also got a start on their Wilderness Survival merit badge as they learned different methods of purifying water, starting fires without a match, and even building a survival shelter and sleeping in it for a night.

We didn’t have enough interest for Water World, so the boys changed this month’s outing to a pool party at Kissing Camels club.

Day: Saturday, Jul 13

Time: 10 a.m to 2 p.m.

Admission: $5

Lunch: bring your own or about $15 for snack bar.

Location: Kissing Camels Rec Center

More Information: To get to the pool, drive to the round about on Mesa Road, just north of Mesa Road and Fillmore. Turn East and go through the gate. Tell the gate guard you’re attending the Swanson’s pool party. Stay on the road for as long as you can. You’ll drive past the golf course, past some homes and town homes, and then come to the rec center.

When you get to the rec center, tell the lifeguards that you’re with the Swansons. You can pay cash there. If you want to use your scout funds, save your receipts and submit to Kathy Kaelin.

Bring bathing suit, towel, swimming goggles, tennis shoes, parent permission slip.

We’ll be doing some fun games like canon ball contest, swim race, and maybe some basketball.

Call 719-963-5645 if you get stuck, lost, or have questions.
